Five quick tips - how to save big money when buying a big diamond ring.
Five quick tips - how to save big money when buying a big diamond ring.
Tip number one - buy your diamond ring online. Now why online versus offline? I mean, isn't it counterintuitive to buy a diamond ring online? Yeah, well the thing is that online you'll save money.
Why? Well think about it - if you go to an offline jewelry store, well the jeweler has to pay for the taxes, their real estate, and if he wants to be successful he will have an amazing location, maybe even in a mall. So he'll have to pay higher taxes and a higher rent. But, you take the same jeweler and put him online, well he could operate this online jewelry store from anywhere, from a dump for all you care.
So you save money there. The second thing is advertisment on the internet is cheaper than offline, and honestly there's two other arguments. Online you won't be harrassed by pushy sales people, and the second thing is you have more choices. If you go to your local jeweler, well you have what's there, but online you have an infinite amount of choices. So that's number one.
Second tip - know your basics. The basics are the four C's - the carat, the color, the clarity, and the cut. But, the one we're interested in right now is the carat. The carat is basically the weight of the diamond. So a two carat diamond ring, which is kind of a big diamond ring, it's more expensive than the one carat diamond ring.
Here's the key - instead of buying, for example a two carat diamond ring, buy a 1.90 or 1.95 carat diamond ring. I mean, it looks the same. It looks as big as a two carat diamond ring, but since .95 or .90 is a lot less popular than two carat or one carat meaning round numbers, you pay a lot less money for virtually the same size diamond.
The third tip I want to give you to save money is the clarity. Now the clarity, like I said, is one of the four C's. The clarity refers to the fact that some diamonds have imperfections in them and others don't. Of course, the less imperfections the higher the value of the diamond. So people go oh, I want a big diamond ring I'm going to have a perfect diamond. Well here's the catch - most of the imperfections cannot be seen by the naked eye. You need a microscope to see them.
Or, if the imperfections are at the bottom of the diamond you can squeeze the imperfection between the diamond and the setting. So theoretically your diamond is less perfect because it has some imperfections, but you don't see them with your eyes so you save money there.
The fourth way for you to save money is to not get scammed, not get ripped off. There's one scam I want to tell you - it's called the apprasail scam. This is where, for example, a relative gave you a diamond ring and you like it so you take it to the local jeweler and you say, how much is this worth? Now the jeweler says not that much, maybe $300 but I'm cool, I'll give you $400 just to get it off your hands and you go oh, $50 more than what it's worth that's a cool thing.
But, make sure that you make your diamond ring appraised by a lot of different jewelers, and ideally in different cities because it has been known that some jewelers work together. So you go there and it's an amazing diamond ring and it's worth $2,000 and the first one goes yeah maybe $160, but you can check Joe over there and you go check Joe and he said $150, yeah I would have given you $120 but that's okay I'll take it off your hands for $200. They take it and then they sell it for $2,000. So that's a scam you must be aware of.
The fifth tip I want to give you is the total weight scam. This is where you go online or you go to your offline jeweler and you're looking for a big diamond ring, and you look at one and it says something like 2.5 carat diamond ring and you go holy macaroni this is a big diamond ring! It says 2.5 carat, and you look at it and you say weird, it doesn't seem that big to me.
Well, the scam is they say 2.5 but the 2.5 carat isn't only the weight of the diamond, it's the combined weight of the diamond, of the setting, and the band, and if there are other precious stones like emeralds or sapphires on it, then it's included in the 2.5 carats. So when you buy a ring, make sure that the carat you can see on the diamond ring is only the weight of the diamond; not the combined weight of the whole ring. So I hope this helps.
